Day Skipper Theory (Sail and Motor):

This course is of minimum 40 hour tuition plus two assessment papers. This can either be a 5 day intensive course or on a night school basis. To attend this course assumed knowledge is none.

Aim

The aim of a shorebased day skipper course is to provide the student with the basic knowledge required to progress onto the Coast Skipper / Yachtmaster qualification.

Course Content

  • Navigation - Basic chart work. How to draw an E.P., Understanding tidal heights and tidal streams. Elementary Pilotage and seamanship.
  • Rules of the Road - To identify and avoid collision situations and understanding the basic sailing rules.
  • Meteorology - Understanding the shipping forecast. Where to obtain weather information. Looking at the sky and understanding the observable weather to enable practical decision making.
  • Buoyage - Basic understanding of navigational marks and their use.

Recommended Pre Course Reading

RYA Day skipper - Shorebased and RYA A Seaman's Guide to the Rule of the Road.

All course materials will be provided.

The recommended pre course reading and the '5011 chart symbols and abbreviations' are additional charges and can be sent once the booking is confirmed or can be purchased on-site.

All theory assessment papers are graded on-site.
